History of thriller Films

Thrillers use suspense, tension and excitement as their main elements. Thrillers stimulate the viewers moods giving them a high level of anticipation, expectation, uncertainty, surprise, anxiety and terror. Thrillers normally have alot of  adrenaline in them and are fast-paced. Plot twists and cliffhangers are normally used within a thriller.

The usual sub-genres for thrillers are psychological thrillers, crime thrillers and mystery thrillers. A common theme in thrillers is that innocent victims dealing with psychos.

The aim for thrillers is to keep the audience alert and on the edge of their seats. The protagonist in thriller films is set against a problem, an escape, a mission or a mystery. No matter what sub-genre a thriller film falls into, it will emphasize the danger that the protagonist faces. The tension with the main problem is built on throughout the film and leads to a highly stressful climax.

Common methods and themes in crime thrillers are mainly ransoms, captivities, heists, revenge and kidnappings. Plots of thrillers involve characters which come into conflict with each other or with outside forces. Thrillers often present the world and society as dark, corrupt and dangerous. There are clues within a thriller and the viewer/reader should be able to determine the solution at about the same times as the main character.

Thrillers take place mostly in ordinary suburbs and cities, although sometimes they may take place wholly or partly in exotic settings such as foreign cities, deserts, polar regions or the high seas.

Ancient epic poems use similar narrative techniques as modern thrillers. The first thriller film was made in 1926 it was called The Lodger and was by Alfred Hitchcock it was a suspenseful Jack the Ripper story.
