Sound

Sound - Scream 1

In scream I analysed sound shots throughout the film. There is all different types of sound depending on what film your watching, what part of the film your in and what genre it is. In a thriller film, sound is one of the key tools used to create suspense and convey drama, as the different types of sound connote different things to the audience.

The first sound I found was "off screen sound". It happened when the woman is on the phone and you can hear the voice from the person she's on the phone to. "off screen sound" is sound when you cannot hear where it is coming from. This informs the audience of the conversation between the woman and the killer.

The second sound I found was "parallel sound"  this is when the man is getting stabbed with the knife  you can hear the sound of the knife going into the man without seeing it. This informs the woman that her husband is dying. This creates fear for the audience hearing the man get butchered to death.

This analysis has taught me where sounds can be put in the thriller film and where you would use them in different situations. For example I know when a Non diegetic sound is used, when you want to use sound which is not part of the film world e.g. a soundtrack, sound effects and voiceovers.

Camera Shots

Camera Shots - Scream

One of the camera shots that was used in Scream was "Close Up". The "close up"shows a fairly small part of the scene and emphasises on something, such as characters face and neck in detail that it fills the screen,  the evidence for this was when the camera done a close up of the dad as the little girl was getting attacked. This was shown to show the emotion in the face of the dad, this relates because it shows how the dad is feeling after he finds out his daughter is missing. He is distraught and shocked.

Another camera shot that was used in Scream was a 'Mid Shot'. The "Mid shot" is when the camera frames the actor from the waist up, this was when the women that was getting attacked and was holding the phone and the knife this was used to make the audience understand what she is going through and it was also shown to see the girls body language. It was conventional because she is scared of the man and it shows that the woman is weak in this thriller film.

This scene informs the audience of the thriller genre because that scene uses suspense, tension and excitement as its main elements. This scene heavily stimulates the viewer's moods giving them a high level of anticipation. It leaves the audience on the edge of there seats because they want to know what was going to happen next in the scene.

Editing

- The Strangers

Editing is essential in any film as edits are the device that makes the film the genre it is or puts more emphasis on the genre as certain types of genres use certain edits more than others to achieve desired affects.

The first point I identified in Strangers was 'slow editing'. This is shown when Liv Tyler walks slowly towards the door and leans against it which conveys to the audience that she is feeling scared and sense of anxiety and she is interpreting that someone is on the other side of the door. Slow editing creates tension and suspense as prolonged scenes have this effect. Through slow editing the camera conveys that the character is weak and scared. This is a common convention of a thriller as it builds up anticipation.

The second point i identified was a 'reaction shot'. This is shown when Liv Tyler goes from the door to the window. By doing that shot it shows she is scared because she is checking everywhere to see who is in the house. Reaction shots are very quick and come up on u sharply which creates shock for the viewer , it makes out the character is on edge and nervous. This is also a common convention in thrillers.

The third point i found in Strangers was 'Jumpcut'. This is shown when the camera suddenly moves to the door when it bangs this creates suspense for the viewers  because they think somethings going to happen to Liv Tyler. Jumpcut makes her look like she is uneasy and frightened it creates tension and this is what happens in this effect. She is uneasy and worried when this effect happens in the film. This is also a common convention.

Another editing shot used in the Strangers film was the linking shot, this was when  she goes into her bed after looking out of the window in the living room to look out of the window in her room, she is checking weather the girl has gone for a second time. It shows that the woman is still very shaky and still very scared and she wants to make sure that the women is gone. It relates because it shows that the women character is on her own and very vulnerable. It is conventional because it shows how weak and scared the women character is and this is typically found in a thriller film. Also the audience will feel the suspense from the film and they they feel the emotion that the girl is going through which is conventional to a thriller because it pulls the audience in and makes them think more about the film.

This analysis has taught me all the different editing types and how to do them for example I would use slow editing to create suspense. Also it has taught me that i have to use different lengths for some shots.
