Planning editing style

Editing is essential in any film as edits are the device that makes the film or the genre it is, or puts more emphasis on the genre as certain types of genres use certain edits more than others to achieve desired affects.The length of each shot determines the pace of the film and helps determine the mood.


The first editing style that my group will use will be "Slow Editing". Slow editing is when clips are juxtaposed together at a slower pace and this is used to create suspense. We are going to use this to prolong the scene and create tension for the viewers. By using Slow Editing it allows the action from the thriller to take its time to be revealed and creates a dramatic effect. It is conventional to a thriller film because it creates suspense for the viewer and makes the scene seem scary from the build up of tension.

We will also use "linking shots" this is where a number of shots are linked together to add emotional impact. We are going to use this because we think by linking shots together it will create a tense atmosphere and will leave the viewer on the edge of there seat thinking of what is going to happen next. This is conventional to a thriller because it brings one scene into another which makes the thriller flow and make sense.


Another shot we will use is "jump cut" this is when the film suddenly focuses on something else. We are going to use this shot to shock the viewers and to make them get in to the thriller more by keeping them on edge. By using the Jump cut it goes from one part of the thriller to another to create tension and suspense. It leaves the viewer thinking what has just happened and wanting them to watch more. It is conventional to a thriller film because it is not just focusing on one scene it focuses on another one which therefore, makes it seem more real and makes you think that the things going on are actually happening.


The last shot we will use is "Shot reverse shot" this is mostly used in films where a conversation is taking place and it is when one shot quickly follows another. We are going to use this because there is a conversation in our thriller movie and we think this shot will work well with our thriller. By there being a conversation in our thriller when we use the Shot reverse shot we can have both the characters talking within the same frame therefore, it all blends in together.It is conventional to a thriller film because it makes the conversation  going on work within the Thriller and it makes the viewers think what is going to happen next.

Opening credits

The purpose of having opening credits is that it shows the audience who is in the film such as the actors and who the director is off the film. Credits also help the audience to get a better image of what genre the films going to be.

Opening to se7en

The colours used in the opening of se7en are mostly black which builds up the suspense and then the white film credits contrasts the mood of the audience because white represents purity there also is a little bit of red to suggest blood and murder which creates tension and represents danger.

The style of the credits are small and flickery and sometimes get bigger to emphasise the atmosphere of the film. The flickeryness of the credits builds the suspense within the film and by doing this relates to a thriller. The generic conventions of a thriller film are the eery dark colours and the enigma to who the character is in the opening credits and the digetic sound when the writing is being written and when it is getting blacked out. Also the background music is slow eery creating the conventions of a thriller.

The Sixth sense opening scene

The colours used in the opening of The Sixth sense were black and white. The black and white contrast each other because the black is used to create suspense and to leave the viewer on the edge of there seat waiting for the film to start where as white is a Sign of purity and innocence therefore they work well together because the viewer doesn't know what to expect.

The style of the credits are in a plain white font and when they go into a new credit a different effect is used each time this is used to keep the viewers thinking all the time about the film. This is used to create an every nature to the thriller.

Filming schedule

A filming schedule is important to have so you know what your going to do and when your going to do it, you also have timings so you can tell if you are on track or not. We did follow the filming schedule completely kept in timings and done what the schedule suggested.

Risk Assessment

Risk assessment

It is important to consider risks before filming because if you don't  your characters are at risk of getting injured and could seriously hurt themselves. You need to assess the hazards if there are any during filming and take the appropriate action to prevent them happening and making sure filming is safe and able to do.

The risk assessment will assist you by filming because it makes you aware of the hazards and tells you what you need to do in order to prevent them.

Group narrative

Out of our group we have each made an individual narrative but with all of them there will be advantages and disadvantages, by the end we will choose one of them and stick by it for our opening scene to our thriller film.

Brittany Terrelonge

For Brittany's narrative it is 4 friends sleeping over starting off as a normal sleepover watching films as discussing secrets when one of them decides to put across the idea of doing an Ouija board and they all end up agreeing to it. But when they do it one of them gets spooked and drops the glass, this is bad and as soon as it happens spooky things start happening around the house and they all become scared and what follows is unknown.

Advantages of this is that is has a good basis for a film and can easily include special effects that could show the house to be haunted and what things happen could be presented well. It is also is good as it relates to the age group as it is something that would happen at a sleepover but includes what could go wrong.

The disadvantages that come from this are that it may be hard to include all special effects as we only have the basics, it will also be hard to create a scene and make the house seem spooky and haunted. It will also be hard to be all serious about what is happening and will have to include some good acting which may be hard to do.

Katie O'Shaughnessy

Katie's individual narrative is that there are 4 people living in a house and one of them becomes possessed, this is because she is the youngest and most vulnerable, the other 4 get spooked out and decide to do an Ouija board and it spells out the girls name, and says other various spooky things, in the end the get in an exorcist to sort her out.

Advantages of this theory is that it is a good set for a thriller film, you could include various jumpy scenes, eery sounds and edits to make it seem as if the girl is truly possessed.

Disadvantages of Katie's narrative is that it would be very hard to edit it to a good standard to make the story believable and also have to include various props and things that may be hard to obtain, another down side is that it seems the narrative for the opening scene has all of the story embedded in it and what happens later on will just be little extras and no real surprise.

Tayler Coe

A man has been kidnapped and taken and put in a room alone. If he is not saved or found his way out of the room within the 6 hours he is given by his kidnapper then a new form of spider will be released upon him where it will eat and kill him. The charachter in the room will be a man who has been part of a gang and robbed and killed inocent people and this is now his karma. The enigma behind the man captured, Carter ( the kidnapper ) is one of the people that was a victim to the gang but survived the incedent and is now getting his own back on him.

The advantages of taylers is that he thought about it lot and that if it could work it could be effective.

 The disadvantages of this idea are that taylers idea is that it would be hard to find a life size spider that is capable of killing and eating someone alive.


My narrative

My idea for my thriller is that we create a voodoo doll of Taylor so that when we do anything to the voodoo doll it happens to Taylor for example if we broke the leg on the voodoo doll Taylor's leg would break as well. 

The beginning of the thriller starts off that brittany is obsessed with taylor and because she is mad and completely loopy she creates the voodoo doll of taylor so if he ever hurts her she has a way to get him back which is very twisted.

Brittany's best friend katie is very shocked that she has come to this solution to try and get Taylor bearing in mind Taylor is wild and has so many birds on the go. Katie is trying to look out for brittany because she doesn't want her to get hurt and doesn't want her to get in trouble for creating the voodoo doll.

Taylor has annoyed Brittany so much that it is driving her crazy seeing him with other girls that aren't her and therefore decides to use the voodoo doll. Katie hears about brittany going crazy and sends her beloved will to go and find brittany and to save Taylor's life and stop Brittany from getting into trouble

The advantages of my thriller film are that

Planning cinematography

Camera shots are important to include within a thriller film because they give off effects that may make the audience feel emotion, it can also build tension and suspense or give the feeling that something is about to happen.

One of the camera shots being used in the film is High angle- this is when the camera is positioned above the object and this makes the image look smaller. We are going to use this camera shot when Tayler is looking at his past victims and when he is setting his sights on his new targets katie and brittany. This is conventional to a thriller film because it leaves the audience in anticipation for what is about to happen to the girls. By doing this shot makes the girls look weak and innocent and that something bad is going to happen to them.

Another shot which will be used is Zooming in - this is when the camera moves in and out of an object to create importance and to draw the audience into a closer relationship with the subject. We are using this shot when the movie comes to an end when tayler appears outside and he is behind the girls and they have no idea he is there. Zooming in is conventional to a thriller film because it catches the audiences attention and leaves them on the egde of their seat because they want to know what is going to happen next. It also shows the body language and facial expressions of the characters therefore, the audience can get an idea of how they are feeling.

Hand held shot is used to produce a jerky, bouncy, unsteady image which can create a sense of immediacy or chaos. We are going to use this when the girls first suspect that things start to go wrong  by doing the wigi board by the lights flickering on and off and noises being made, we are going to use the hand held shot at this point. It is conventional to a thriller film because when it starts to go wrong for the girls we want the audience to get into the film and leave them in suspense because they will be wondering why the camera is bouncing and jercking from side to side.

A long shot is a shot that shows all of a fairly large subject such as a person and usually much of the surroundings. We are going to use this shot when Tayler is following katie into Brittanys house this is how Tayler knows where the girls are going to be. By using this shot we can see katie walking to the house and Tayler closely following behind her. This is conventional to a thriller film because the audience will be shocked when they see Tayler following katie and it will leave them in suspense and on the edge of there seats for what is about to happen next.

Overall my target audience will build a relationship with the characters because they will be able to see what the film is about and what the characters would go through if it was an actual film and they will be able to see how the characters are represented and how they act.

Character representation

It is important to have a variety of characters because it makes the story line much more interesting than it would if it was just a film with one main character it also allows the audience to view different emotions from the different characters. With all different types of characters the film is going to be less boring and more things will be happening. Its also important to have various representations within a thriller film because you do not want all the characters to be perceived as the same you want them to be different otherwise there wouldn't be any point to the film being made.

I  think Katie will also appeal to the audience because they will feel sorry for her because of what has happened to her and that it was unlucky for Tayler to target her and her friend for no reason.
